Which Material Is Better, PET Or PP? What Are The Characteristics Of Each?

2023-09-14

Generally, PET materials are stronger, more durable and heat-resistant than PP materials. If you need to make more durable products, such as bottles, cans, etc., PET materials may be more suitable. In addition, PET materials are also more transparent than PP materials. When making transparent or translucent products, PET materials have more advantages. However, PP material also has its advantages. It is softer, lighter, and easier to process and shape than PET. If you need to make soft and lightweight products, such as bags, clothing, etc., PP materials may be more suitable.

What are the characteristics of pet materials?

1. Bright colors, small color difference, and strong visual three-dimensionality.

2. PET materials do not explode during processing, and edge chipping rarely occurs.

3. It has good mechanical properties, the impact strength is 3 to 5 times that of other films, and it has good folding resistance. Resistant to oil, fat, dilute acid, dilute alkali, and most solvents.

4. It has excellent high and low temperature resistance, and can be used in the temperature range of 120℃ for a long time. It can withstand high temperatures of 150℃ and low temperatures of -70℃ for short-term use, and high and low temperatures have little impact on its mechanical properties.

5. The permeability of gas and water vapor is low, which means it has excellent gas, water, oil and odor barrier properties. It has high transparency, can block ultraviolet rays, and has good gloss. It is non-toxic, odorless, hygienic and safe, and can be directly used in food packaging.

6. It has good electrical insulation properties and is little affected by temperature, but its corona resistance is poor. It has good temperature, weather resistance and chemical resistance, low water absorption, and is resistant to weak acids and organic solvents, but it is not resistant to hot water immersion and alkali resistance.

7. PET resin has a high glass transition temperature, slow crystallization speed, long molding cycle, large molding shrinkage, poor dimensional stability, brittle crystallization, and low heat resistance.

What are the properties of PP?

1. Physical properties: non-toxic, odorless, tasteless, milky white and highly crystalline with a density of only 0.9-0.91g/cm3 and good stability to water.

2. Thermal properties: It has good heat resistance. Its products can be sterilized at temperatures above 100°C and will not deform at 150°C without external force. The embrittlement temperature is -35°C. Embrittlement will occur below -35°C, and its cold resistance is not as good as polyethylene.

3. Chemical stability: The chemical stability is very good. In addition to being corroded by concentrated sulfuric acid and concentrated nitric acid, it is relatively stable to various other chemical reagents. However, low molecular weight aliphatic hydrocarbons, aromatic hydrocarbons, chlorinated hydrocarbons, etc. Propylene softens and swells, and its chemical stability increases with the increase in crystallinity. Therefore, polypropylene is suitable for making various chemical pipelines and accessories, and has good anti-corrosion effects.

4. Electrical properties: It has a high dielectric coefficient, and as the temperature rises, it can be used to make heated electrical insulation products. Its breakdown voltage is also very high, making it suitable for use as electrical accessories, etc. It has good voltage resistance and arc resistance, but has high static electricity and is prone to aging when in contact with copper.
